Under strict compliance with the regulations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the health protocols established by Governor Pedro R. Pierluisi to protect residents and visitors, the director of the Company of Tourism of Puerto Rico (PRTC), Carlos Mercado Santiago, announced that the number of ships that dock on the Island continues to increase.
The San Juan docks will receive over 20,000 visitors on 13 cruise ships this week, contributing an estimated economic impact of $2.8 million. Today is the busiest day, with an estimated 9,500 passengers arriving as early as 9:0 a.m. m. on the Carnival Mardi Gras, the Carnival Conquest, Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam and the Celebrity Apex, ships that join the Norwegian Sky, which is in Puerto Rico on a technical stop without passengers since last Monday.
Today’s visits represent an estimated economic impact of 1.2 million to various product and service sectors such as transportation, food, retail, guided tours and other sectors that directly and indirectly serve the tourism sector. The cruise industry is one of the most regulated at the moment. In addition, to reinforce security, the Government of Puerto Rico requires all cruise ships that arrive on our Island to fully vaccinate their eligible population. Vaccination rates exceed 98% among passengers and crew members.
Similarly, when signing Base Port agreements, the requirement of antigen tests upon boarding is stipulated. These companies have made sure to have and require the strictest preventive measures for the safety of their crew and passengers. Similarly, the CDC requires these cruise lines to contract with local medical-hospital institutions to attend to any emergency situation. It should be noted that so far we have not had any medical emergencies due to COVID 19 and this is largely due to compliance with all established health protocols and measures.
Added to these five cruise ships are Silversea’s Silver Spirit, Regal Princess, Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas, Norwegian Epic, Seadream 2 and Silver Whisper, six cruise ships that docked in the port of San Juan last weekend; as well as the arrival between December 23 and 24 of the Viking Sea, Carnival Liberty, and a second visit of the Silver Spirit for a total of 14 visits in one week.
