All Nippon Airways’ parent company ANA Holdings and Hilton Hotels have received the top accolade – gold status – for their environmental, social and governance efforts (ESG) by Standard & Poor Global.
A number of other airlines and hotel companies have also been recognised in S&P’s Sustainability Yearbook 2022 with China Airlines, EVA Airways and Melia all achieving silver status.
Latam Airlines Group, Airports of Thailand and NH Hotel Group made the bronze category of the S&P study which assessed more than 7,500 companies globally for their ESG efforts.
The study noted that while the social aspect of ESG can be hard to assess “social issues have gained prominence in the corporate world during the coronavirus pandemic, and as a result companies are increasingly turning to diversity, equity and inclusion as part of the effort to grapple with the S in ESG.”
It also revealed that overall most companies across all industries are yet to even set basic emission reduction targets, let alone net zero ones. The yearbook said only about 37 per cent of companies reviewed have announced plans to reduce direct emissions.
More than 50 travel and aviation companies were assessed this year to come up with those that had the best ESG commitments in place.
Roberto Alvo, CEO, LATAM Airlines Group, said: ”We are proud that a company from this part of the world has been recognised by an organisation as important as S&P, in a dimension that is critical for all companies today. We have many plans and aspirations as a group. We have set very demanding goals for ourselves.
”In the coming months, we hope to announce new initiatives that will allow us to continue advancing in the protection of iconic ecosystems in Latin America and the migration to a zero waste to landfill model, and to increase our connectivity capacity for the benefit of the region’s communities.”
Meanwhile, NH Hotels said the recognition highlighted its “commitment to making sustainability a strategic and growth value for the company, a value that we share with Minor Hotels, of which we are part.”
Ramón Aragonés, CEO of NH, added: “As we have done so far, we will continue to work with a holistic vision to fulfil our commitment to integrate responsible business management in the economic, social and environmental spheres and to become a benchmark in sustainability within the sector.”
