Rick Hemingway, owner of Back Woods Quail Club, says he is looking forward to bringing more than 1,400 shooters and their families to the area for the 2022 U.S. Open. This is the second time Hemingway has brought the National Sporting Clays Association event to the club, which is located in both Georgetown and Williamsburg counties in South Carolina‘s Hammock Coast®. The first time was in 2013, and roughly 950 people participated.
The U.S. Open will feature 15 events from Monday to Thursday, culminating in the main event on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, when the U.S. Open Champion will be crowned. Hemingway stated that shooter registration is open until May 16 and that onlookers are allowed to attend. They can also visit the hundreds of exhibitors, which will include a variety of food and merchandise relevant to shooting clays, as well as well-known gun manufacturers like Barretta, in addition to watching the shooters compete.
Discover the county, the event will not seem crowded because there are 700 acres for participants and spectators to spread out on. Visitors at the event, according to Hemingway, can also take advantage of the county’s beautiful beaches, shopping, and restaurants. Mark Stevens, director of tourism development for the Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce and the Hammock Coast of South Carolina, encourages visitors to stay and visit the area during the US Open.
Sel Hemingway, Rick Hemingway’s brother and former Georgetown County administrator, agreed. He is in charge of the event’s parking, volunteers, and shuttles. Back Woods Quail Club is set on Old Morrisville Plantation, with over 15,000 acres of open fields, timber lands, and woodland regions, less than 30 minutes from historic Georgetown and 45 minutes from Hammock Coast beaches. More than 700 acres of the site are currently under use.
This preserve offers traditional Southern quail, deer, and turkey hunting, as well as a variety of interesting and challenging clay target shooting activities. It’s open all year and seven days a week, with hours ranging from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Individual and group shooting and hunting programs are available at the club.
