The winner of the American Express One To Watch Award for Marseille restaurant AM par Alexandre Mazzia, the namesake location managed by French chef Alexandre Mazzia, was announced today at the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. While the restaurant and its employees are well-known in France, the prize is a unique moment in which 50 Best recognizes them as rising stars on the international scene. AM has become a symbol of the city’s gastronomic resurgence, with a dining environment that mimics Marseille’s originality.

Mazzia was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he lived until the age of 14, before moving to Marseille in 2010 to work at Le Corbusier’s Cité Radieuse restaurant, where he was honored by Gault & Millau with the ‘Young Talent’ award in 2011, an honor that encouraged him to open his own restaurant. AM par Alexandre Mazzia opened in the city in the summer of 2014, quickly delighting both customers and reviewers, earning three Michelin stars in an extraordinary six years.

The restaurant has only 22 seats and serves a menu centered on veggies, fish, and shellfish that is influenced by a variety of international influences. Mazzia’s cuisine takes guests on a voyage of self-discovery, and the chef has an uncanny ability to simplify even the most complicated gastronomic masterpieces. Dishes like courgette blooms in green satay with saffron beurre blanc and crystallised seaweed with bottarga exemplify the chef’s ‘cuisine of emotion,’ which includes unusual ingredient and flavor combinations.

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants’ Director of Content, William Drew, says: “It’s an honor to be named this year’s American Express One To Watch, AM par Alexandre Mazzia. We’ve been following the restaurant’s success in France in recent years, and we’re ecstatic to be able to share this beautiful Marseille location with 50 Best’s global audience, as well as to honor Alexandre’s unabashed passion and singular cuisine.”

This announcement forms part of the lead-up to the reveal of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, with the awards ceremony taking place at Old Billingsgate market in the City of London on Monday 18th July.
