A passport scheme is being developed to encourage visitors to see more than two dozen waterfalls across the state. With the introduction of the first-ever statewide Waterfall Trail in West Virginia today, chasing waterfalls takes on a whole new meaning this summer. The trail is aimed at people who want to venture off the usual road, reconnect with nature, and experience more than two dozen waterfalls in exchange for a chance to win special rewards.

With over 200 waterfalls around the state, the trail’s twenty-nine cascades are the ideal way to start a summer of waterfall hunting. The trail passes by well-known waterfalls like Blackwater and Sandstone, as well as lesser-known beauties like Finn’s in the New River Gorge National Park & Preserve and Drawdy in Boone County. Cathedral, for example, rises above the valley floor, while others span vast rivers.

The West Virginia Waterfall Trail opens at a time when 69 percent of Americans are expressing a newfound love for nature. According to a poll by Destination Analysts, “enjoying scenic beauty” is a top trip attribute for 2022 for 70% of passengers. Major travel journals such as Lonely Planet, TIME, Frommers, USA Today, and Condé Nast have recently recognized West Virginia as a top-tier tourism destination. All of these magazines have praised the state’s breathtaking natural beauty and opportunities for outdoor leisure.

Among these natural treasures, the gushing waterfalls that can be found all around the state provide the ideal setting for an adventure. To get started, go to and sign up for the West Virginia Waterfall Trail passport to be delivered to your phone. Travelers can stamp their passports when they visit each of the trail’s more than two dozen waterfalls by checking in at each one.

The Waterfall Trail is made possible by a partnership with Bandwango, a travel technology platform that allows for quick and easy check-in at each stop.

The more you learn, the more money you’ll make.
The West Virginia Department of Tourism is providing exclusive gear to waterfall chasers along the way:

If you visit three or more waterfalls, you’ll get a special sticker.
If you visit ten or more waterfalls, you’ll be given an aluminum water bottle.
You’ll get a waterfall wanderer t-shirt if you visit 20 or more waterfalls.

In the Nation’s Newest National Park, We’re Chasing Waterfalls. Six waterfalls at America’s 63rd national park, the New River Gorge National Park & Preserve, are included in the trail. These magnificent waterfalls can be discovered in isolated coves, like Turkey Creek Falls, or at the end of a picturesque hike, like Glade Creek Falls. The falls along the West Virginia Waterfall Trail highlight must-see attractions to add to a summer road trip route as visitors continue to throng to the national park.
