The demand for hotel rooms in Chicago in the summer of 2022 was close to, and in one market sector, exceeded, pre-pandemic levels. The total number of room nights required by hotels over the summer (June, July, and August) topped 3 million, which is close to 90% of summer 2019 levels. With 1.06 million hotel room nights in summer 2022 compared to 1.03 million in summer 2019, the demand for group hotel rooms during the summer of 2022, which comprises rooms reserved specifically for participants of significant meetings and conferences, outpaced that of the summer of 2019.
Following the June debut of the new When You Go You Know campaign, Chicago’s summer of travel was a success. Between April 18 and September 5, more than $150 million in hotel revenue was generated by this campaign and early summer messages from Choose Chicago. Additionally, 8.1 million hotel searches and 1.2 million travel searches were sparked by the promotion. In order to increase room nights, Choose Chicago also collaborated with Expedia and the Chicago hotel industry on a targeted consumer campaign. Over 63,000 room nights were booked as a result of the promotion, which ran from May 9 through September 5, generating an estimated $20 million in hotel income.
Given the city’s continued great recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, Chicago’s unprecedented designation as the best big city in the US for six years running is a testament to the industry’s resiliency. Readers of Condé Nast Traveler are aware that Chicago is home to top-notch entertainment, stunning architecture, top-notch museums, and an outstanding culinary scene. With the first-ever Sueos Festival in May and the inaugural US Sail Grand Prix Chicago race at Navy Pier in June, as well as the successful full returns of Chicago mainstays like Lollapalooza, the James Beard Awards, and the International Manufacturing Trade Show (IMTS), the biggest and most established tradeshow in North America, 2022 has been a banner year for events as well.
